Birmingham City Business School

Based at the University's main City North campus, Birmingham City Business School is one of the six Faculties in the University.  It incorporates three academic departments and two specialist centres:

  •  Department of Accountancy and Finance
  •  Department of Business and Marketing
  •  Department of Management and Human Resources
  •  Centre for Leadership and Management Practice
  •  Centre for Internal Audit, Governance and Risk Management

The Faculty has in excess of 4,000 students, with around 1,950 on full-time undergraduate programmes, 1,200 students on part-time undergraduate and professional programmes, 350 full-time postgraduates and 350 part-time postgraduates.

Programmes in the Birmingham City Business School have a strong regional representation, but also draw students from both national and international markets, with around 10% of the current student body coming from outside the UK.

Birmingham City Business School is proud of the international dimension to its work.  It currently attracts around 500 students from nearly 80 countries and our intention is to expand our international students to around 20% of our total student community.  Our undergraduate students are all eligible to spend a semester abroad during their second year, studying with one of our network of partner universities in Europe, USA and the Far East.

We have strong external recognition for the quality of our academic programmes.  A significant amount of our provision has accreditation from professional bodies.

The Birmingham City Business School has an extensive portfolio of courses covering all the major business disciplines, Advertising, Accountancy, Business Studies, Business Law, Business Psychology, Economics, Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Management, Public Relations.

A highly successful Joint Degrees Programme offers undergraduates the opportunity to gain one of 50 different award titles made up from 11 subject pathways.

All our full-time undergraduate students have the option to incorporate a work placement in their programme of study, and to gain a sandwich degree award.  The popularity of this option has grown strongly and we expect in excess of 160 students to go out on placement in 2009/10.  Students are increasingly being successful in gaining placements with ‘blue chip companies' and we believe this is an indication of the quality of support we provide in placement search together with the strong relationship we have built with employing organisations.

Our MBA and MSc Management full-time programmes offer a wide range of choice which has proved extremely attractive to international students and we have one of the largest provisions in the UK university sector.

Our Centre for Internal Audit, Governance and Risk Management offers a highly distinctive MSc Audit Management and Consultancy programme in full-time, block-release and distance-learning modes, and provides students with the opportunity to gain professional qualification with the UK IIA and/or its international equivalent.  The programme has trained some of the most senior audit professionals not only in the UK but also in African and Caribbean countries.
