Garth Knox was born in Dublin, studied at the RCM in London, then played with most of the leading groups in London in a mixture of repertoires from baroque to contemporary music.  From 1983 - 1990 he was a member of Pierre Boulez's Ensemble InterContemporain in Paris, and from 1990-1998 a member of the Arditti String Quartet.

In 1998, Garth Knox left the quartet to concentrate on his solo career. As a soloist, he has given premieres by Henze, Ligeti, Schnittke, Ferneyhough, James Dillon, George Benjamin and many others.
